What is engineered stone?

We hear this question a lot, and it's a great one! With more and more amazing products on offer, it's important to understand exactly what your options are and the reasons we sometimes recommend one finish or product over another. And it's not always about price.

What is engineered stone? Engineered stone was first introduced into the market in the late 80s and is a man-made product as opposed to natural stone. The main factors involved in the creation of the product were a demand for more consistency in the look of the stone and the durability of the product. It's created using mostly naturally forming quartz which is very strong. Slabs of engineered stone are made to exact 'recipes', so you can guarantee consistency of the look of the piece you choose, where natural stone has variations in both colour and pattern.

Many people also choose engineered stone because of its hygienic properties - being almost completely non-porous it is very easy to keep clean and won't chip or stain like a more porous natural product will.

Engineered stone can be used almost anywhere in the home. Kitchen benchtops, splashbacks, wet areas, outdoor areas and even fireplace surrounds. It's very versatile and the extensive range of colours, textures and finishes make it suitable for any design or decorating style, from classic right through to the most modern.
